4. Topics
in Cognitive Linguistics. The course concentrates on basic concepts, empirical findings,
and recent developments in cognitive and functional linguistics. Language and its relation to conceptualization and cognitive
processing. Correspondences between metaphor formation and discourse strategies.
5. Cognitive Science across Disciplines. The course emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary study of
mind and intelligence. Cognitive science, philosophy, psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and linguistics.
6. Theories and Methods
in the Study of Cognition. Theoretical approaches to the study of human cognition.
Language structure, language processing, concepts and categories, knowledge representation, analogy and metaphor. Formal methods
are emphasized.
7. Semantics and Cognition.
This course explores current issues in the study of meaning and its interaction with
other areas of cognitive science. The focus is on cognitive semantics, formal semantics, pragmatics, and meaning construction
in general.
8. Current Issues in
Cognitive Science. Emphasizes the conceptual basis of cognitive science, including
representation, processing mechanisms, language, and the role of interaction among individuals. Current developments in each
field are considered as they relate to issues in cognitive science.
9. Language Acquisition
and Current Issues in Cognitive Development. Discussion of the acquisition of language
by young children, its stages and mechanisms. Current issues in human development of interest to cognitive scientists.
10. Autism, Down Syndrome,
Language, and Cognitive Development. Current issues in the studies of autism and
DS. Discussion of the underlying mechanisms of mental representations in autistic and DS children.
